HoneyRock Publishing released Francisco Villanueva’s Musashi for Solo Marimba in March 2026. The publisher identifies the work as the third-place winner in Category A of the PAS Italy Composition Contest 2024. The Percussive Arts Society’s results list the composer under his fuller name, Francisco Villanueva Gutiérrez.
The approximately ten-minute score is intended for an advanced, college- or professional-level player. Rather than presenting a chronological history, it uses contrasting sections to respond to ideas and emotions associated with the life of the Japanese swordsman Miyamoto Musashi. Its technical and musical demands include muting bars with the body and adding a vocal element near the end of the first movement.
