Ludwig Albert is a Belgian marimbist, composer, educator, and artistic director. He earned a First Prize in Percussion, a Higher Diploma, and a specialised master’s degree in marimba at the Royal Conservatoire Antwerp, then continued his marimba study with Keiko Abe. Between 1996 and 2000, Albert performed with Abe on concert tours in Belgium and Japan.
Albert founded the marimba-and-voice duo Patrasche in 1995 and Marimba-Projects in 1996. He has released fifteen albums devoted largely to his own compositions, improvisations, arrangements, dedicated works, and combinations of marimba with other musical forms. His compositions include the double concerto The Universe and Heartwood, written with Rodrigo Marques; both appeared as set works in the final round of the 2026 Universal Marimba Competition.
From 2004 Albert established marimba master’s programs at the Royal Conservatoire Antwerp and later LUCA University Leuven. He developed the “Movin’Grips: Body Controlled Marimba Sound Production” approach for this teaching. In 2016 he completed an artistic doctorate under that title at the University of Antwerp, empirically and theoretically validating an educational-engineering model for marimba teaching.
Albert has worked with Adams Percussion since 2011 on the Ludwig Albert signature concert marimba, while Innovative Percussion has produced his signature mallet line since 2004. He founded the Universal Marimba Competition & Festival of Belgium in 2000. At its 10th edition in July 2026, he served as founder and artistic director, performed in the jury gala, and led a masterclass on body-controlled marimba sound production.
