Fumito Nunoya is a Japanese marimbist born in Odate, Akita Prefecture, and based in Germany. His career connects solo recitals, concerto appearances, recordings, teaching, and international competition work, with programs that often move between original marimba repertoire, transcriptions, Japanese music, and contemporary projects.
Nunoya graduated from Yamagata University and later completed Master of Music and Artist Diploma studies in marimba performance at the Boston Conservatory, where he was noted as the school’s first marimba or percussion major to receive the Artist Diploma. He came to wider international attention after winning third prize at the 3rd World Marimba Competition, and also received prizes at the Ima Hogg Young Artists Competition, the Libertango International Competition, and the Percussive Arts Society International Marimba Competition.
His discography traces a broad repertoire: Red Dragonfly, The Sower, Piazzolla on Marimba, Classics on Marimba, Concertos on Marimba, Fusions and Fantasies, and Marimba Prayers. In Germany he teaches marimba at the Hochschule für Musik Detmold, appears as an Adams Marimba Artist, and serves on the board of Marimba Festiva e.V. His recent competition roles include jury work for the Japan Wind and Percussion Competition and chairing the jury for the Keiko Abe Marimba Competition.
