Isao Nakamura is a percussionist, marimba player, and educator. He graduated from the Faculty of Music at Tokyo University of the Arts in 1981, from the percussion program at the University of Music Freiburg in 1987, and from its soloist program in 1989. Composers including Toshio Hosokawa and Klaus Huber have dedicated works to him, which he has premiered.
Nakamura received the Kranichstein Music Prize in 1986 and a Special Prize at the Aoyama Music Awards in 1992. The 2004 performance Mitsui no Bansho, featuring Nakamura, received the 4th Keizo Saji Prize. In 2025, he received the 43rd Kyoto Prefecture Culture Award for Distinguished Service.
He taught as a professor at the University of Music Karlsruhe from 1992 to 2024, has served as a guest professor at Kyoto City University of Arts since 2014, and was appointed a guest professor at Aichi University of the Arts in November 2024. On March 16, 2024, he performed a two-marimba recital with Noriko Tsukagoshi at Yamaha Hall, including Japanese premieres of works by Akira Miyagawa, Dai Fujikura, and Toshio Hosokawa.
