Pius Cheung is a marimbist, percussionist, composer, and educator. His solo-marimba recording of Bach’s Goldberg Variations brought broad attention to his work as an interpreter, and he has since presented recitals at venues including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Beijing’s National Centre for the Performing Arts, Taipei’s National Concert Hall, and Kyoto Art Center, as well as percussion festivals in Europe, Asia, and the Americas.
Composition is integral to Cheung’s career. His catalogue includes Allegro Brutale, commissioned by Evelyn Glennie; the percussion-and-dance ballet Heaven and Earth; concertos written for the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra; the duo concerto Theater, Resonance, and Zen; the chamber work Samsara; and Hibiki, a marimba concerto commissioned for the Eugene Symphony. These works range from solo and ensemble percussion to mixed chamber music and large orchestral forms.
Cheung also serves as a competition juror and gives masterclasses at conservatories and music schools internationally. He is Professor and Chair of the Percussion Area at the University of Oregon (as of July 15, 2026).
