Description

A work for marimba and piano composed in 1982, based on the famous theme from Niccolò Paganini’s Caprice No. 24.

An atonal set of variations unfolds while retaining slight traces of tonality. The opening theme undergoes successive transformations, leading to a middle section filled with stillness. The music then takes on the character of fauvist minimalism before surging into a tumultuous climax.

Commissioned by Hiroyuki Iwaki, the work was premiered at the Karuizawa Music Festival on August 21, 1982, by Iwaki on marimba and Kaori Kimura on piano. It lasts approximately nine minutes. Schott Music publishes the performing score as SJ 1013.

The version for marimba and orchestra (1983–1986) is distinct; its performance materials are available on hire.
