i dont exactly know if this is a proper technique, but i hold my inside mallets like i would normally for two mallets witht eh end of the mallet in the fat of my hand, and slide the outside mallet under the outside one so it rests on it, with the end of the shaft at the base of my palm. i keep the outside one fairly free, so they just sit there and use my bottom two fingers to adjust the inside mallet when trying to change mallet distances.
