Sounds like two separate issues are being addressed here, with a little bit of crosstalk going on...

There's something which we can call "Mexican Dances Syndrome" - when (right-handed) players first learn a piece which places great technical demands on their (weaker) left hand, they often focus on the execution of that left-hand part, while - musically speaking - neglecting the right-hand part, which is often, if not usually, the melody of the piece. (Most of us have probably also heard players working on the Mexican Dances, and in the first movement, the left hand arpeggiation is nice and strong, and the right-hand melody is lackadasical).

Thus, the comment from teachers that "the right hand is the 'important' part here!"

Obviously, don't get so hung up on the ostinato pattern that you let the right-hand part go south on you; but also, just because the ostinato fulfills an accompanimental role, doesn't mean you can let note accuracy go out the window.
