It all depends upon what the context is - it's hard to answer the "what's the best way to mic' a marimba" question without having more information.

Recording a marimba in a studio may not call for the same mic's or mic' placement as a recording in a concert hall. Recording a marimba may not call for the same mic's or placement as amplifying the marimba.

The "mic' worn on the player" approach has been used successfully for pit orchestra work (amplification), at the very least - it's certainly a viable option in some situations. I wouldn't use it to record a recital or concert of solo marimba works - in that situation, the sound of the hall is a significant factor in the sound of the recording - indeed, the sound of the room, in many ways, can be just as significant as the sound of the instrument in terms of yielding a successful recording.
