What Bill is saying about Rattan mallets makes sense, but I definitely prefer the feel of a birch mallet. An interesting observation is that most of the good players I can think of off the top of my head are using birch. Evelyn Glennie, Mark Ford, Michael Burritt, Leigh Stevens, She-e-Wu just to name a few. I know Keiko Abe uses rattan but sound is definitely not her strong suit. Also, I have wrapped my own mallets before, but the yarn I buy in a store lasts me about 1 month. My encore mallets have lasted about 16 months and they haven't needed a re-wrap. I think I'm just buying the wrong kind of yarn. Any suggestions?
