Anyone know? Interesting description! That's the marimba being played with slap mallets. I am only aware of the model available from Vic Firth. It's in the Emil Richards line, and is just called Slap Mallets. The composition doesn't actually call for them, but Keiko Abe uses them there, and in a simular-sounding section in Matra, also by Akira Nishimura. When I perform Kala, I will probably do the same.
Instead of having a ball at the end, slap mallets have a flat, rectangular head that creates that 'slap' sound. It basically gives you lots of fundamental and then that 'ticky' sound.
For your interest, the complete instrumentation of Kala is:
Solo marimba 2 vibraphones 2 xylophones 2 glockenspiels crotales chimes 2 congas, 2 bongos maracas 2 steel drums 3 cymbals
