With all due respect- It is a well-known scientific fact that correlation is not the same as causation. Though you see a correlation between poor players and young players, it does not give you permission to make a stereotype about young players being the cause of poor players.

Also, how is a player supposed to mature if they do not play pieces that challenge them? If kids do not play pieces that are "out of their range" they may get bored with the instrument or they may not progress as players.

I hope you don't teach anyone, because one of the most important things to do with your students is encourage them- not discourage them. You GUIDE them as musicians. They may not be able to pick up Rhythm Song and play it musically- but with some guidance and encouragement it could turn out to be a beautiful thing. If you let them listen to expressive, musical players- their chances of playing interpretively are much greater.

I am 17 years old. I am a high school pit instructor. (Some of my students are older than me.) I am a very capable player, and I am "young". I pour my HEART into the things I play, teach, and learn as a marimbist. I am very offended by your post. Open your eyes, and more importantly- your mind. Have some respect. Stop trying to discourage progress and the learning process. YOU, by making the statments you have made, are hurting the integrity of the marimba more than any kid who yearns to play a difficult piece.

How old are you by the way? You say you are a 3rd year University student...so, you're about 21 or so. You have, what, 4 or 5 years on me? There are players out there who have 50 years on you. What is your classification of "young"? When Keiko Abe walks up to you are you going to feel so ancient and wise?

Sincerely,
Rebecca

Music is for all. There is no such thing as having a "right" to play a piece.
