Good suggestions, but I would add that apart from durability you should also find something with a certain degree of softness otherwise you will get a definate buzzing noise from the string. All the leading marimba makers have tried to come up with a solution to this issue... If your instrument sounds good enough to warrent the cost, you might approach one of these makers directly and ask for "replacement" string.
I have found that if you treat these "softer" string with respect, and don't over tighten them, the life span is rather long. My current one has lasted 7 years, but I do have a spare...
