in regards to the birch vs rattan, it's all a matter of opinion. Everybody plays different and has different tendancies. I know lots of people to who prefer rattan over birch only for the "give" that it has, and they all play STevens. Personally, I like rattan for two mallet passages. All depends on your chops.
Good example (possibly a good thread starter) -
Third movement of the Creston Concertino in 6/8 time (those of you who know what's coming next are already nodding your heads), and the rhythm of the measure - and it comes back a few times - is "1+2, 3+4, 5+6" as double stops. RATTAN all the way. Imo, it's the best way to "bounce" through. W/birch, it almost takes too much work. But as I mentioned above, everybody is different with different strengths and tendancies.
