Greetings.
Actually, we are both right and wrong. I spoke with Leigh a couple of days ago, and he clarified a few things in my memory. It is definately not correct when I said that there were Malletech marimbas made before the DeMorrow era. You are correct about the announcement made at the PASIC in Phili, although Leigh only remembers announcing his performance as the last on the Musser. He doesn't remember announcing from the stage that he had purchased DeMorrow instruments. It was probably well known at the convention however, as word travels fast.
At that convention, Leigh and Doug began discussions about new designs for the marimba Leigh had in mind (to make the Demorrow instruments more similar to the Musser instrument of Leigh's design). During the following period of time (maybe 6 months to a year), Doug continued to make marimbas of his own design, because he had orders to fill from prior to his working for Leigh. According to Leigh, Doug then made either 1 or 2 marimbas while employed by Leigh, but they were %100 still in the DeMorrow design. Shortly thereafter, Leigh and Doug parted ways. It was in March/April of 1991 that Leigh began developing his instruments in Arkansas. At that time Doug DeMorrow no longer worked for Leigh. So in Leigh's mind, Doug never made a Malletech marimba. It wasn't until the fall of 1991 that the first Malletech prototypes were built. I went to NJ in either of summer of 1992 or 1993 with my DeMorrow instrument, tested it opposite a Malletech, and at that time switched to Malletech.
So, this is how the history of it all goes according to Leigh. It is possible that other versions of the events might exist from talking to other people. However, Doug truly never made a Malletech marimba.
Take care all.
