I would agree with Mike Hamnett about there being a "preoccupation" amongst some musicians with the near mechanical time keeping, and any attempt to flatten your instrumental skills into static robotic processes are to be avoided, but as I said before the key to good time keeping either as a soloist, a performer with a tape, or a member of an ensemble is primarily perception.
One way to get an intimate knowledge of subdividing the beat might be to improvise different subdivisions over the beat of the metronome, and then gather a group of fellow percussionist to "jam" over each other's groove. This will contrast the difference between static time and ensemble time, which are two completely different things...
