In regards to "...practise playing the piece with only the left hand or right hand notes separately." -

Personally, I believe that learning hands seperately is not a good thing to do when learning any marimba piece. Even though the endless sixteenths are blatently contrapuntal (sp?) from hand to hand, this adds extra steps that really don't need to be taken (3, to be exact: Learn left, learn right, then both together). Why do it 3 times when you can do it once? Don't get me wrong, though. Bringing out each line of counterpoint within the melody at different times/places is what gives this piece its character, by all means, but learning them seperately is the exact opposite of the definition of counterpoint. The "melodies" must work together and it's my opinion that learning them together is the best way to acheive ones goal (once again stating of course that it's exteremly important to be able to differentiate the inner lines).

As far as "the eleventh hour" - I worked that thing for 6 months and because i knew it SO well, that 3 weeks to speed it up was a snap. Yes, fast playing is different from slow playing in the sense of ratios (the same space to move/cover but with a faster motion in a shorter moment in time), but physically, it's the fast playing that's BASED on the slow playing. Without the temperment of getting the EXACT motions down, speeding it up too soon can/will develop bad habits and skipped steps (ESPECIALLY after only 3 months). Learning it slow and steady for a long time will also help you to be more relaxed once the tempo cranks thanks to the comfort level with the notes. Fianlly, the "musical process" doesn't stop once the tempo goes up, and this is also another given. Tweeks/adjustments to technique, playing position, body position, and more, happen ALL the way through learning a piece of music.

I know, i didn't address the rubato aspect of it all, but come on folks. We all know that before we can get "shmaltzy" with it, we neeeed to know the notes first. Theirs just no way around it.

That's all on this for now... more later. In the mean time, off to work...

Best,

CJT
