So Ive been working on this marimba spiritual mallet thing and to be totally honest, i'm not too sure what I'd use either. I tried everything in your list except for the ip soloist and a few others of my own. I've found that the fords are nice, but i'd use 3 out of the hardest set and put a med. hard on the bottom. i liked using the zeltsmans as well, but what i liked even better than the nz's were the encore mimura 3's (yea yea, i know, i always talk about the nm series, but i just don't know what it is about them - they're just an awesome series of mallet, that's all). My final attempt was a set that i had made myself a while back out of an old set out of the malletech concerto series (slate blue, i think... forget the number). Wrapped twice in rubber tape and then with cord rather than yarn (kinda look like balter cord mallets, but longer and have a different sound).

Sorry i can't be more of help.

Best,

CJT
