Hi,

From someone who had to learn in a hurry:

Let me suggest that if you intend to learn four-mallets quickly enough to get enjoyment soon, then (though I play Stevens) avoid Stevens grip. It's much quicker and more practical to learn a traditional style grip, be it Burton, scissor, etc...

Once the grip is picked out, (grab a local high school percussion instructor...they'll help you out on the grip,) if you must learn how to read music (you didn't say whether you know) then I'd suggest picking up some simple adult beginner piano instruction books. As you learn, pick some easy hymns and get used to playing chords and such. In other words, do it much like if you were learning piano. This would be a great start to getting the feel of the intervals and such. Then pick up one of the books that have been mentioned to work on some of the more technical stuff such as rolls and mallet independence.

I tend to ramble, forgive me.

Hope this helps,

mike
