Thanks all for your interesting insights- this is fascinating stuff. But again I'm picking up on a potential conflict. Earlier posts from Wilfred and Matt (please correct me if I'm getting this wrong) seem to find that longer is better because- among other things- a relatively longer, thicker bar reduces the tendency for overtones to take over the fundamental in the bass notes. But I got the impression that Nico attributed heightened fundamental in the bass end of his vibes to wider bars.
As I think both Matt's marimbas and Nico's vibes sound terrific, I know that I must still be missing something here. Maybe this is the "relative" part of tuning?
Something tells me it''ll be a long time before we get to see the NOVA documentary on "Unified Bar Percussion Theory..."
