i don't really have a good answer since i have never done it, but i would think both. on top you will get more contact sound. underneath you will get more true tone from the resonators. another good place to ask is the vibraphone forum which appears to be down at the moment. these questions have been asked and answered many times on that forum. http://www.thevibe.net/
