you are most likely holding the mallets tighter than you should. you should feel them vibrate in your hands. to keep practicing however... try a little bit of zinc oxide sports tape wrapped loosely, made by mueller, easily found in the foot care products near the pharmacy section at walmart. nu-skin or bandaids may help mask the pain as well... but these are short term fixes.

ultimately, you need to slow down, relax your hands 1000%, and let the callouses develop. it might be a good time to learn various "grips" as well, since they will lkely be rubbing different parts of the fingers. it is good to know them all anyway...
