Well, yeah, but only to a point - I'd agree that a beginner doesn't need the "best," most expensive mallets on the market - but it's hard to get even an acceptable sound with really crap mallets, and I don't see the benefit of having a student start out with horrible tools (either mallets or the marimba itself).

Agreed: Balter makes some very good student-level mallets, as well as some very good professional mallets.
