Howdy. I use the Innovative percussion mallets of which you spoke earlier. Specifically, the 240's which are in the soloist series: nice long birch handle that isn't too thick. The head produces a lot of fundamental tone, and is a very medium mallet that can cover a wide range of dynamic levels.

If price is an issue, then Encore might be a good choice. A friend of mine uses their 43B's and loves them. They are heavier overall than the Innovative mallets, and are also a bit top heavy. They run $22.40/pair from Weiss. I'm not quite sure how durable they are, though... as the same friend noticed some wear and tear sooner than he should have.

I would recommend the medium mallet in Innovative Percussion's soloist series over Encore, feeling that it is worth the extra twelve bucks or so (for a set of four). But hey, each to his own :-) Hope this helps. Take it easy
