One other quick thought regarding the tempo debate raging between you and your vibraphonist - whose recital is it? If it's his, then you should defer to his musical wishes. If it's yours, then he should do his best to accommodate your chosen tempo. If it's a joint recital of some sort, where neither one of you has the final musical decision, well...
