I am a freshman in college this year, I would say, my mallet experience is a bunch above all the other incoming freshamn, but I had a goof HS program with Drumline and everything so that helped...but

I would say good 2 mallet skills i.e. being able to move around the keyboard agilily (not a word I know..) a good idea would be to know all of your scales..try practicing them in 3 octaves, then play the arpeggio 3 octaves, then the inversions of the arpeggio 3 octaves all up and down..that is a great warm-up and helps movement on the keyboards.
4-mallet skills are a bit more complex. A must (acording to me) would be:
-be able to play 2-mallet passages while holding 4 (without your unuesed mallets wobbling around would be best)
-be able to use all 4 mallets independently
-ROTATION!!!
- be able to play a solo equivelent to Yellow after the Rain, Sea Refractions, Musser etude 6, 8, 9, or 10, or Rain Dance. Sorry Kyle, but Abe isn't neccesary

This is what I would reccomend knowing, I know people who couldn't even hold 4 mallets at first who are in the percussion program, howeevr if you are a percussion major though, you should know this stuff. I would also reccomend a good knowledge of snare drum..it really helps.

The Audition: I know you didnt ask about this, but I think it's important to address. Pick pieces that arent extremely long, but demonstrate your skills very well. For example Rain Dance by Alice Gomez dislpays indepences, rotation, rhythm, rolls, and musicality, its 6 minutes long. Musser etude 9 shows all this and it's only a minute and a half. I would pick the musser over the gomaez. The auditioners are hearing a lot of auditions and they are really tired of it..picking short works will cast a good image on you. Unless there is a time you have to fill, then disregard all that.

(Hope I helped)
