Well, in modern marimba/xylophone context, 2-tone mallets are the mallets with 2 layers of core: hard at the center and soft in the outer layer, so that when you hit hard, it will sound hard and loud while when you hit soft, it will sound mellower, thus 2-tone. Theare are multi-layered mallets of which name is rightly multi-tone.
