Most vibe mallets will, by nature, sound "clunky" on the marimba due to their weight, besides the cracking issue. I've used very hard mallets (Balter yellows, both yarn & cord, Deschler pinks (for you old timers), and the like) carefully in the high register of the marimba for certain timbres, but in general you should stick to marimba mallets. BTW, in addition to the Friedmans, the Samuels models are designed for both marimba & vibe use. I find them slightly less clunky than the Friedmans, esp. the DS18's. Save the new green ones for vibes. They're much heavier than the blacks.
