Generally, I agree with the premise, that one shouldn't be at their "maximum performable tempo" when performing a given piece of music, but I think that spending the time and energy to get the third movement of the Creston Concertino up to mm=120 is a little more than is necessary.

My suggestion to Joe: find some recordings of the Creston, determine an approximate range of tempos suitable for performance of the movement, and if you want to take it up a notch or two just for the sake of having it under your hands, go a couple of clicks up on the metronome. IMHO, learning the movement at mm=120 when one is going to perform it at mm=100-105 is taking the concept a little further than is necessary. As always, YMMV.
