When I started working on one handed rolls, I just started doing them. Get an interval thats comfy for you (4-5-6th) and start by playing eigth notes, and then moving faster. Its important to remember that one-handed rolls take forever to develop. And that you should start slow, not the crazy super fast 1-handed rolls you might have tried. I think its also a good idea to use some actual music to help you develop your one handed rolls. These are the pieces I recommend
Smadbeck - Etude #3 (the whole point is to develop 1-handed rolls) Zivkovic-Les Violin Morts (a good piece to work on a roll in one hand, and a moving line in the other) Kite-For Alice (has a lot of single hand rolls on 1 note, which Ive found is the hardest one to do, because the interval is so close)
