Greg, Yes, you use the ends of the bars in order to keep your mallets from hitting one another. In movement 2, I assume you're talking about the opening melody; I have mallet 2 in the center of the bar and mallet 1 on the end, and I roll it. In movement 3, mallets 1 and 2 are in the bar's center, mallet 3 is on the end bar, and mallet 4 is in the center. OR, you can try 2 on the end, 3 in the center. Experiment. I wrote a paper on the acoustics of the marimba. The best sound comes from striking the center, and the next best sound comes from striking the ends. Hope this helps, Lisa
