Actually, the Marimba sound is a typical example of a vibrating bar with two free ends. Thus you should be able to control which mode of vibration to bring out by the point you hit with a mallet. Striking at the center of the bar merely means that you produce the strongest fundamental possible, as well as the strongest overtone possible at every odd mode.

Obviously "the best sound" is determined by the music one is playing. Each note demands different timbre and one should carefully think which point on the bar and how strong or soft one should strike at which point of the mallet and which angle etc.
