Good question about Paul.. I initally taught him the way I played. Which was a combination of a number of different ideas that I liked. Pretty much "Musser and Rosen" oriented....Including a bit later, a couple of elements of Steven's way of holding mallets (why is everybody so concerned about this grip, that grip.. Gary's grip, George's grip Polly's grip, ya-da--who cares... There are no "GRIPS"...just a few guys got found out, or advertised themselves...search for yourself. Hey, you could invent the "GREG GRIP" I'm serious, I'm not being smart..Then you could write a book ).. Paul probably studied with Stevens. Actually, I think he did...To tell you the truth, I forget. I know he was very impressed with Stevens very early on.
About the pieces. I understand what you say. I used MEX Dances and Gordon's Etudes a lot as "teaching pieces". They each have very specific technical challenges, as I mentioned in my other "reply", and are very musical. Bill
