Whoo! I don't want to give anybody the wrong idea about what I think is important in musical expression. The whole point of a concerto is to have imaginative performance, but as well to put forward a good show, through virtuosity and execution. My composer friend once went so far as to say that writing a concerto is a cop out because a good performer will make it work just being a soloist, and because by its very nature it is a crowd pleaser. Dont entirely agree with him, because there are many wonderful concerti out there, but this is always an element. When I mean groove, that is one aspect, but flow is a better general term. Imagination while playing is what makes certain players stand out against others. Groove is life. It's not everything in music, but please don't think I'm saying that if a piece doesn't rock its no good. The problem I have with the pieces I mentioned in the 'concerto' post is not that it doesn't rock out, because the Ziv. no. 2 and the Ewazen both have their moments (the whooe last mov. of the Zivkovic is relentless.) I believe I mention a few other reasons why I don't like them more so than others. Ben: I know this was a light hearted response :) I guess I just felt the need to exonerate myself from being seen as just some boneheaded rocker. No worries :)
