I certainly don't want to turn this into a hostile invironment, but I just wanted to see what you meant by that. I reread Mr. Moersch's post regarding Beaten Paths, and I feel he in no way "bashed" the work. He was merely saying that the piece is too short to put so much time into it. Merlin is a MUCH longer piece, and truly a "concert piece". Mr. Moersch is I think one of the most important figures in helping grow the number of pieces in the marimba repertoire, and the last thing he would want to do is to bash Mr. Babbitt's piece. And keep in mind that this was directed towards me, and I wanted to know people's true opinions about the piece. And Mr. Moersch (though not having met me) is somewhat familiar with my level of playing (through past posts regarding pieces I have worked on), and he knew that it was not the best piece for me to be looking at right now. At the sametime, he didn't say anything like "Beaten Paths is stupid, Merlin is better, work on that", because he knows that I would not be ready for that either. Also, in the past Iw rote about Alejandro Vinao's "Khan Variations" and how much I liked it. Mr. Moersch said to me, "at this point, I would stay away from it if I were you", because he knew my level. We are lucky to have him here, and we should all realize that the last thing we should expect is for him to give us bad advice, because it has been everything BUT.
And you said Merlin is "not that hard" and "it just isn't a good piece of music". Well, can you back that up? Tell me what isn't good about this piece? And why do you feel it is so easy? By all means, I am not tryng to start a fight, that is the last thing I want to do. I just want to see your insight on why you feel this way.
