My instructor discourages us from attempting to imitate any specific person's interpretation, as he wants us to develop our own musical voice. I have listened to recordings of cellists, specifically Ma, to aid in guiding and refining my ideas, however. I hate listening to some of my classmates who give no regard to anything but what is specifically put on the page and play flat-line musicless notes and hope to never do the same.
I am not sure of the level of our orchestra here. I know there are some highly talented individuals in many sections, but as for the ensemble on the whole I am unsure. I've been in the other large ensembles - symphonic band and wind symphony - for the past few semesters. I suppose the strings section is average for a college ensemble, and the wind players and percussionists are a but above average.
Last year at the Kite seminar I was by far the youngest student there, and the one with the least performing experience. While I held my own during the majority of the material we covered during class, when the others are attacking pieces such as Marimba d'Amore and working on fine-tuning very specific aspects of their playing and I at the time was working on Rhythm Song and Yellow After the Rain and needing to fix larger issues, I couldn't help but to feel a bit silly.
