Joseph Schwantner's Velocities (along with Jacob Druckman's Reflections on the Nature of Water and Roger Reynolds' Islands from Archipelago (II): Autumn Island) was commissioned by William Moersch, Leigh Howard Stevens, Gordon Stout, through the Percussive Arts Society and with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts Consortium Commissioning program.
The premiere performance of Velocities was given by Leigh Howard Stevens in Gothenberg, Sweden on October 27, 1990. The U.S. premiere performance was given by Leigh Howard Stevens at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention in Philadelphia, PA on November 9, 1990.
