they are turning grimy because they are unfinished wood. I have both sets of those mallets as well as other malletech and innovative mallets which are unfinished. You cantake a wah cloth and wash them off, it works pretty well. I've never heard of unfinished shafts getting course though...you might want to try sanding them down with a light sand paper. They are also rubber mallet shaft covers available from some manufacturer, I don't remember which though..sorry
Bt Malletech mallets certainly do not suck. The CN14 Khakis are pretty good ensemble type mallets, though they are really easy to overplay on, and get that annoying plastic ball sound. The Stevens mallets are tied for the best mallets in my book..
