yes yes. You're absolutely right! I just got a little carried away.. I was making some replacement bars for a Kori marimba for a school and the wood I used was DYNAMITE! Bingo, perfect the first time..rare...

But, yes, Bryce..start out with any domestic hardwood..maple, cherry, whatever..and make about 3000 bars! Just kidding..or maybe I'm not...if you DO copy another marimba, the sizes may not work perfectly but keep plugging away...try to copy as best as you can...maybe first just tune the fundamental many times..then try to add the harmonic 2 octaves higher. If you look under a Musser bar in the lowest 2 octaves or so you can see where to "grind" to lower the fundamental (center) and that harmonic (farther out)...leave the other harmonics for later..this is pretty simplistic but could be a good beginning...I could write all day...but my brain will feel like a smoke-filled niche.
