Thanks a lot for your help guys. I've got my foot in the door to try and some ideas on building them. For my first attempt I think i'll try a 1 or 1.5 pentatonic marimba with some thing like oak, maple, or cherry bars... ahh so many choices.. maybe every note with different kinda of wood. Haha
But if all goes well on this one I might try something a bit more ambitious like a 3.5 octave chromatic one out of rosewood. Now with these last rounds of tests out of the way I should be able to get some work done.
