Behzad,

There is a difference between mallets designed in a two-tone style, e.g. my line with Innovative Percussion or the Malletech Concertos, and mallets designated as "two-tone." The only decent, officially designated "two-tone" mallets are by Yamaha or Saito -- the rest are garbage.

However, for your auditions on an Adams 5.0, I would recommend using Van Sice rubber core (M111-116), in a voicing selection as you think appropriate.

I heard a recent auditionee play Miki's Time, using Stevens "two-tones." Rather than being able to listen to the player's accuracy, touch, and phrasing, I spent an agonizing 10 minutes, amazed that anyone would choose to produce such a terrible sound and fearing for the number of bars that would be cracked. I finally stopped him, just before the last note, and made the recommendation that he immediately throw those mallets away.

Good luck with your auditions. At Peabody, at least, I know that Jon and Bob will be listening for accuracy, tone, touch, and phrasing, not extremism at the cost of the above.
