My impression (and I could be wrong!) is that the Stevens is the favored grip for marimba around the college and University levels in the U.S. Even tho I agree with the sentiment that it does offer capabilities which cross-stick grips tend not to offer, I get a chuckle out of the almost religious fervor with which some students are told, "you HAVE to use Stevens grip for marimba, and you HAVE to use Burton grip for vibraphone!"

Leigh Stevens presents a fairly convincing argument in favor of his technique, but the idea that other grips lack validity is, obviously, absurd.
