Hello everyone, especially James Walker whom I know from Ithaca College. I studied with Gordon Stout from 1981-1985. I use three different grips- Stevens, Burton, and Stout- specifically to take advantage of each of their strengths. I sometimes use two diffrent grips at the same time. For instance, I may use the Stout grip in the left hand and the Stevens in the right. Why? The Stout grip has a very stable and relaxed feel when performing quick lateral (side to side) movements. Using the Stout grip, one's hands are closer to the mallet head which in turn brings the hands closer to the keyboard. Secondly, there are two fingers in between the two mallets instead of one finger as in the Burton grip. A wider interval can be reached then, using the Stout grip as compared to the Burton. This is especially useful in the lower range of the marimba where the bars are often wider. Lastly, because both mallets are touching each other, I find that Double Stops or Double laterals are more easily struck together. Additionally, in comparing the various tone colors produced by different grips, I've found that the Stout grip achieves a somewhat darker quality. Thanks, David Hall
