Greetings to all,
Although I respectfully endorse Larry Lawless' comments, I wonder why he (and many others) refer to grips saying that this or that what are not supposed to do this or that technique. Myself (and I am not alone) have performed countless concerti (sometimes with string sections up to 24-22-18-16-14) with stevens grip, it being on marimba, vibes, multi, etc - never a conductor, colleague, complained about lack of power.
All techniques you mention in this posting regarding limitations of certain grips might be real to a certain point - but more real is the fact that without knowledge, "real" technique, control, etc, etc, etc, etc, the grip has no real influence. We could go on this discussion for centuries and reach no real result, maybe there is nothing to find down that route.
All these grips are available, well documented by fabulous players and professors. We could maybe give this topic a rest and get down to some real music... what about that?
All best,
P
