Applications will open on July 1, 2026, for the 2nd Keiko Abe International Marimba Competition, organized by the Keiko Abe Foundation.

Keiko Abe is one of the most influential figures in the history of the marimba. Through her pioneering technique, artistry, and advocacy, she helped transform the marimba from a relatively “folk” instrument into a fully recognized concert instrument. This competition continues that legacy by supporting the next generation of marimbists and encouraging the global development of marimba performance.

First Round — Video
October 15, 2026

Second Round — Video
November 30, 2026

Final Round — Live in Tokyo
February 15 – 18, 2027

Total prizes: €15,000

Divisions

The competition has two divisions:

Professional Division
No age limit

Young Artist Division
18 years and under

The Keiko Abe Foundation states that the competition aims:

To inspire and cultivate the next generation of marimbists to express their hearts through marimba music and share the joy and love of music with the world.
